When I arrive for an in-home newborn session in Columbia, SC, and there’s a 3-year-old in the house, I can almost feel the tension in the air. Mom greets me with a tired but polite smile, apologizing in advance.
“He’s full of energy. I don’t know how this will go.”
I get it. Parents are often nervous—especially when there’s a wild, curious, bouncing-off-the-walls toddler in the mix. But here’s the truth: I love 3-year-olds.
They’re not too much. They’re not overwhelming. They’re just… real.
Before I even pick up my camera, I usually get down on their level. I ask their name. I ask about their new baby brother or sister—and then I ask about them. What they like. What they’re into. Nine times out of ten, they want to show me their room.
And I go.
Even when mom says, “Oh no, we don’t need to do that—you’re here for the baby,” I tell her I don’t mind. I want to see their world.
And it’s usually there, in their room, that I capture the first photo of the day—not of the baby, but of the proud big sibling, bubbling with personality, giving me a full tour and telling me a lot of words.
That connection matters. It helps the whole session flow.
Once they’ve had their moment, they’re often ready to “help” me take pictures of the baby. They might grab a toy or sit near the baby for a second (or three). Then they wander off again—and I quietly use those minutes for peaceful shots of mom and baby, dad and baby, or both parents together.
Then, just as I’m settling into a quiet rhythm, that three-year-old curiosity kicks back in. They come back. Want to hold the baby. For about four seconds. And that’s perfect.
These little moments—the real ones—are why I adore lifestyle newborn photography.
