My 7 Newborn Baby Essentials Every Mom Needs Before Baby Arrives
Bringing a newborn home is magical, but it can also feel overwhelming — especially when it’s your first, or even your third! As a mom of three, I’ve learned that having a few trusted essentials ready before your baby arrives can make the first weeks so much smoother. These are my absolute must-haves, based on my own experience.
Snuggle Me Organic
This cozy lounger is perfect for newborn snuggles. My babies always slept more peacefully on it, and it’s one of those items you’ll actually use every day. I loved having a safe, comfy spot to place my little ones while I napped on the bed beside them.
Organic Wrapover Bodysuits + Zip-Up Pajamas
H&M onesies that fold instead of going over baby’s head are a lifesaver, especially for late-night diaper changes. I always paired them with organic zip-up pajamas for quick and easy outfit changes. For my third baby, we didn’t know if it would be a boy or a girl, so I stocked up on beautiful neutral pieces for the first 0–6 months. These neutrals aren’t just practical — they also look amazing in newborn photos and are perfect for a cozy, in-home session.
A Robe You Can Live In
I literally lived in my robe for the first few weeks after each baby arrived. It’s perfect for late-night feedings and those moments when you don’t even want to think about getting dressed. Comfort over everything — trust me, you’ll be so glad you have it.
Hydration + Snacks
Breastfeeding and caring for a newborn is exhausting. A new water bottle makes drinking enough water feel a little more fun, and keeping easy, one-handed snacks nearby — like granola bars, nuts, or even a little dark chocolate — helps keep your energy up during those long nights.
Postpartum Helpers
Nipple balm, nursing bras, muslin blankets, and a postpartum friend who can come over and do your dishes — these are small things that make a huge difference. Seriously, having an extra set of hands in the first weeks is priceless.
A Good Stroller with Bassinet
Whether it’s a short walk or a trip to the store, a stroller with a bassinet makes life so much easier. My babies loved sleeping in it, and I loved being able to get out of the house without extra stress. Being from Europe, this purchase was a no-brainer — daily walks are such an important part of a baby’s development and immune system.
Diapers, Wipes, and a Newborn Session
Stock up on enough diapers and wipes for the first two months — you’ll be so glad you did. And if you want to capture those tiny, fleeting moments, plan your newborn session ahead of time. As a newborn photographer, I recommend scheduling your session during your second trimester — when everything feels more settled, but you still have the energy to research and thoughtfully look through the portfolios of the best newborn photographers in your area. And remember, you can schedule a newborn session right in the comfort of your own home, which makes it easy and relaxed for both you and your baby.
A little note
Every baby and family is different, but these seven essentials have been my lifesavers through three newborns. Preparing ahead doesn’t just make life easier — it gives you more time to enjoy the quiet, magical moments with your baby. And a little extra planning now, like choosing neutral clothes or booking your newborn session early, will help you savor every first smile, yawn, and tiny hand squeeze.
