Tucked away behind busy shops and only 20 minutes from downtown Columbia, Sesquicentennial State Park is one of my absolute favorite locations for family sessions—and one I don’t think gets enough love.
Most people are surprised to find such a peaceful, scenic spot so close to the city. If you’re looking for a place that feels like a retreat into nature without a long drive, this is it. “Sesqui,” as locals call it, is truly a hidden gem, and it’s quickly become one of my go-to spots for capturing beautiful family memories.

Why I Love Photographing at Sesqui
This park offers an incredible variety of natural backdrops in one location—open fields, woods, a lake, a charming wooden bridge, and quiet walking trails.
And for the practical side of things: there’s a bathroom nearby (yes, a total win when you’re wrangling little ones), and a playground and splash pad that make it easy to turn a photo session into a fun family outing. After we wrap up, many families stay to let the kids run around.
A Calm, Kid-Friendly Spot
One of the reasons I keep coming back to this location is how calm it is. Unlike more popular parks that can feel crowded or overstimulating, Sesqui has a slower pace. Kids love looking for geese near the water, spotting turtles sunbathing, or collecting leaves and sticks as we walk. Their genuine excitement makes for the most natural, joy-filled photos.
If you’re considering a family session this year and want a location that’s scenic, convenient, and offers a full experience for your little ones—Sesquicentennial State Park checks all the boxes.
