Tips You Should Know Before Your Newborn Session at Home

My lifestyle newborn sessions are relaxed, natural, and full of love. One of the best parts of having a newborn session at home is that everything feels comfortable and easy—you don’t have to pack up or leave your space. To help make the experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible, here are a few tips to prepare before I arrive.

1. Diaper Change

Start the session with a fresh diaper. This helps your baby feel comfortable and minimizes interruptions once we begin.

2. Clothing

Dress your baby in the outfit you’d like them photographed in before the feeding. That way, if they drift off to sleep after eating, we won’t need to disturb them by changing clothes. Keep a burp cloth nearby just in case of spills.

3. Feeding

Try to feed your baby about 30–45 minutes before the session. A full belly usually means a sleepy, content baby—which is perfect for those snuggly baby photos at home.

4. Temperature

Newborns love to be warm. If you don’t mind, turn up the thermostat a few degrees so your little one stays cozy. A warm environment helps keep babies relaxed and sleepy, especially if we photograph them in just a diaper.

5. Keep It Simple

When it comes to outfits, less is more. A soft onesie, a favorite swaddle blanket, or even just a diaper is often perfect. Simple clothing keeps the focus on your baby’s expressions, tiny fingers, and all those little details you never want to forget in your newborn pictures in your home.

6. Soothe with Sound

Babies are used to constant sounds from the womb, so silence can sometimes make them restless. A white noise machine or even a white noise app on your phone can help create a calming environment during the session.

7. Tidy Lightly (Don’t Stress!)

You don’t need a spotless home for beautiful photos. I usually photograph in the nursery, master bedroom, and living room, so just a quick tidy-up in those areas is plenty. What matters most is your love and connection, not a perfectly clean house.

8. Plan for Breaks

It’s completely normal for newborns to need extra feeding, diaper changes, or just a few minutes of soothing during a session. We’ll move at your baby’s pace, and sometimes those little pauses create the sweetest, most authentic images.

Welcoming a newborn into your family is one of life’s most treasured seasons, and my goal is to capture those fleeting days in a way that feels natural and true to your story. If you’re in Columbia or Lexington, SC and looking for a photographer who specializes in newborn sessions at home, I would be honored to document your family’s love through natural, timeless baby photos at home.
